FACT, originally formed in March 2002, is a Toronto based martial arts company originally compromised of three martial arts schools offering a variety of fighting arts discplines which are: historical European martial arts (Academy of European Medieval Martial Arts (AEMMA)), modern North American fighting style based on the work of Bruce Lee called Jeet Kune Do (JKD Centre), and traditional Chinese Kung Fu Wing Chun (Toronto Wing Chun Academy). The company came into existence to provide an engaging environment in which to deliver fitness and training programs comprised of a variety of martial arts disciplines to those interested in self-development and enhanced quality of life.

FACT has continued to expand and evolve, having expanded its offering to include Systema Downtown (Russian Maritial Arts) and Crossfit (a whole-body physical fitness regimine). Click Offerings and Services for details on these two new offerings.

In order to accomplish this goal, FACT was formed to consolidate resources of the three founding schools in order to facilitate the acquisition and the affordability of permanent training space that is shared between the three member organizations. To that end, the goals of FACT are:

  1. To provide individuals with an engaging and affordable training and fitness offerings as a result of the acquisition of permanent training space;
  2. to promote, organize and train in a variety of martial arts discplines and recreation;
  3. to arrange matches and competitions, workshops, seminars and establishing and granting prizes, awards and distinctions;
  4. fostering good will and sportsmanship; and such other complementary purposes not inconsistent with the mission.

Ryan Kennedy
(Toronto Wing Chun Academy - Sifu & Founder)
began training in Traditional Wing Chun in 1994 at the age of eighteen after trying one of Sifu Sean O'Neils classes. Ryan felt that the system was unique and he began training the next day. After several years of training Ryan became an apprentice at Sifu O'Neils School in downtown Toronto and began to help teaching classes. Ryan also became certified as a Personal Trainer and continues to work with a broad spectrum of people and groups in that field. In 2002 after the closing of the Original Wing Chun School in Toronto, Ryan continued to teach classes and eventually created Toronto Wing Chun Academy in midtown Toronto. Ryan also helped to co-find the Fighting Arts Company Toronto (F.A.C.T.) with an eclectic collection of local martial artists from various styles including Wing Chun, J.K.D. and Academy of European Medieval Martial Arts (A.E.M.M.A.). FACT proceeded to open a unique facility dedicated to the practice of martial arts.

Currently, Ryan continues to train with Sifu Phillip Redmond of Michigan who has been an inspiration for many with his unparalleled knowledge of Wing Chun Kung Fu. Ryan also trains regularly with his peers in Toronto, notably Teddy Tchertov, Joe Virgilio and Hernan Prado to whom have given a lot of support in helping to establish the Toronto Wing Chun Club.

Brian McIlmoyle

Brian had received his designation of free scholler in Oct, 2000. Brian also received his appointment of "Acknowledged Instructor" (AI) designation for armoured longsword instruction in October 14, 2001 by the International Masters at Arms Federation (IMAF). Leon Samadi
(JKD Centre - Instructor)
(bio and photo forthcoming)

Shawn Zirger
(JKD Centre - Sifu & Founder)
has been training since 1980, gaining experience and exposure in Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Thai martial arts. In 1989 Shawn began to pursue a career in health care, earning diplomas and certification as a Homeopath, Acupuncturist and most notably, Massage Therapist. Shawn has always honoured the full meaning of the term Warrior, respecting that in ancient Eastern and Western philosophies, one was not considered to be a warrior simply because they could fight. In early 1991 Shawn met Makoto Kabayama, a Senior Full Instructor under the renowned Sifu Paul Vunak know for their roles in teaching the elite Navy Seal teams in the U.S. before Makoto returned to Toronto to build The JKD Family of Instructors, now a highly respected group of combatants in the Bruce Lee / Dan Inosanto line.

Shawn made it his personal goal to promote the JKD Family and his instructor Makoto Kabayama into the main stream of Canadian Martial Arts, believing that reality based training delivers more of the promises of the martial arts than any traditional training format. With this in mind, Shawn founded the JKD Centre in 1998 after receiving the title Full Instructor under Sifu Makoto Kabayama and Sifu Paul Vunak. The Centre is meant to provide an ever improving quality of education in JKD concepts while providing for additional exposure to the many arts that make up the JKD arsenal.
